Energised by Conversations with Durham University Students

We’re still feeling inspired after our co-Director Fran Harkness’s recent session with Durham University Postgraduate Research students on Research Consultancy. In this session, Fran shared her journey into research consultancy and what it’s like to work in this dynamic field. Together, the group explored the wide variety of projects consultants tackle—ranging from evidence reviews for government policy to public involvement workshops for charities—and discussed how to transition into consultancy, even alongside other commitments. Through practical tips and personal reflections, students learned how they could apply their skills to create real-world impact beyond academia.

These conversations are a highlight for us—sharing our journey and encouraging students in theirs is always so rewarding! The session was filled with engaging questions, including:

  • How can I practice budgeting for clients? Start tracking your research time and learning how long tasks take you—it’s a valuable skill!

  • Are qualitative skills in demand? Absolutely—there’s a strong need for qualitative expertise.

  • How can I secure my first client if my work experience isn’t where I want it to be yet? Volunteering your research time for charities is a great start, and remember to showcase your PhD experience. Your research makes you an expert in your field—not everyone can do what you do in the way you do it!

We loved the energy and curiosity from the students. It’s always a pleasure to help guide the next generation of research consultants!
